Here is the beginning of a painting I’m calling Miss X. I drew this young woman at one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle, the Hudson Diner.  It Is the morning after the night before and the bar is dark with glimmers of  daylight peeking through. At first I thought to use Edward Hopper colors, because of the subject.

I start, very studiously, with a sketch, Notan (value study) and a color study. This painting is all figured out! 

Its easy and fun to do tiny color studies. No worries about details, you can see the big abstract shapes:

 It’s when I start on the full size painting that I run into trouble:

imageI love my central figure, but the colors and shapes are becoming muddy and indistinct. The room looks weird, what kind of a space is this? Not sure what to do….
